Mission Statement

Mission and Goals:
The mission of the Indigenous Music Section of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) is to bring together researchers, musicians, teachers and culture bearers of Indigenous musical practices, broadly defined. “Indigenous” is employed as an inclusive term for all persons and traditions that claim an Indigenous identity.

In bringing together scholars and practitioners of Indigenous music, the section works to organize paper sessions, performances, film screenings, and other activities within the context of conferences of the Society for Ethnomusicology.

Membership:
Any member of the Society for Ethnomusicology with an interest in Indigenous music research may join the section. Those wishing to be included on the Section’s listserv should contact the Listserv Manager.

Elected Officers:
The Chair, Secretary, and Member-at-Large serve three year terms with the offices in a staggered rotation for election. At the end of the Chair’s two-year term, he or she continues on an advisory capacity for one additional year.

Officers are elected prior to the annual meeting at the SEM conference via online nominations and voting coordinated by the Secretary. Terms of officers run in conjunction with the annual meeting.

Charlotte Frisbie Student Paper Prize Committee:
Membership of the Charlotte Frisbie Student Paper Prize Committee is appointed by the Section Chair and consists of three non-student members of the Section. The committee judges submissions based on content of the papers as presented at the annual conference, without prejudice of the topic’s geographical location. In general, the prize committee decides on the winner by February 15 of each year.

The Charlotte Frisbie Student Paper Prize recognizes the most distinguished student paper in ethnomusicology of Indigenous music research presented at the SEM annual meeting. The prize comes with a cash award of $100. All students giving papers on Indigenous topics at the SEM conference are encouraged to submit their papers, as presented (not revised), for consideration.

Conference Panel Committee:
In coordination with the Section Chair, the Conference Panel Committee will solicit panel proposals for upcoming conferences.

Dues:
Membership dues are optional, but are instrumental in the ability for the Section to develop projects and to fund prizes. Suggested dues:
