Indigenous Music Section

of the society for ethnomusicology
About

Welcome

The Indigenous Music Section of the Society for Ethnomusicology was organized as a Special Interest Group in 2009 and approved by the Board of the Society as a Section in 2014. Our membership includes faculty, students, musicians, and independent scholars of Indigenous musics, broadly defined. The word "Indigenous" is meant to be an encompassing term that reaches beyond geographic and political terminologies. The term, however, is used to situate our research on peoples who claim an Native, Indigenous, First, Aboriginal identity—that is, people groups who share common origin stories, kinship ties, connections to place, and who typically have suffered colonial histories.
